A medium-sized grower and dedicated adherent of biodynamics at the western end of the Vallée de la Marne, focused on meunier.
Crouttes-sur-Marne, Vallée de la Marne; 8.4 hectares, around 80% of it is dedicated to meunier.
This meunier-driven cuvée is the more structured, upright and refined of Bedel’s two site-focused cuvées, grown on clay and marl over limestone bedrock. Though not labelled as a vintage, this comes exclusively from the 2017 vintage, when Bedel has managed to create a clean, polished blend despite the challenges of the vintage.
Bedel’s other terroir-specific cuvée, Dis, “Vin Secret” comes from silt and marl on limestone bedrock; it is a genuine NV in that it uses reserve wines and it also uses a much higher percentage of meunier, resulting in a much rounder, more “gourmand” effect.
A subtle, understated nose is dominated by savoury, nutty tones, with olive oil, rosemary and Marcona almonds tiptoeing past in sequence before yielding to something creamier, like macadamia nut. Quite rich and even sweet feeling on the opening, the palate delivers gingerbread, nutmeg and sweet quince jelly that flood the mid-palate. Concentration is massive compared with the nose, and the gourmand back palate is rich with cinnamon and canelés. Acidity really tightens the finish, which is otherwise quite clean textured, helping balance the shape.

Apéritif or after dinner.
The friend who buys exclusively from female-owned businesses.
This is a brilliant "bridge" champagne, in that you can serve it to both your coolest wine geek friends and your auntie and uncle and both will find something to appreciate.
Nutty, herbal and appetising.
