Rousseaux, a historic grower family of the Montagne de Reims was joined through marriage with the Batteux family, which includes famous football coach Albert Batteux, the most successful manager in the history of Ligue 1 (his niece Laurence was the cofounder of the Rousseaux-Batteux brand).
Verzenay, Montagne de Reims; 2.6 hectares in Verzenay, Verzy, Louvois and Villers-Marmery.
Young proprietor Adrien Rousseaux is known for his sensitive winemaking, carefully adjusting his approach for each individual plot and according to the vintage; even this more accessible portion of the range is made exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards. This cuvée combines the vintages 2018 and 2019 with some reserves matured in barrel as well as red wine for a potent, characterful blend. Production is tiny, with only 1500 bottles of this cuvée.
The estate makes several cuvées from single-vineyard plots, many with vines that are more than 60 years old.
The intense wild strawberry and wild yeast nose — a very "natural wine" friendly combo – smells quite appetising nonetheless, with the microbial tones evoking smoke and cloves instead of barnyards. Rich and densely flavoured, with moderate acidity on the entry and a definite sense of thickness, this remains heavily spiced with clove and cardamom, complemented by the richness and sense of sweetness from the fruit. Plentiful acidity, not volatile, is helping maintain the balance while the texture is appealingly oily rather than grippy.
Tangy, rich dishes like chicken adobo.
Entrées or snacks.
The friend who meditates every day and lives on kombucha.
Wild, smoky and berry fruited.
