What
A domaine founded in 1847 that became one of France’s hottest growers thanks to the careful work of fifth-generation brothers Raphaël and Vincent; now a mini-négociant
Where
Lude, Montagne de Reims; their 9.5ha of estate vineyards are spread across the Montagne de Reims and Marne Valley
Why
Rive Gauche comes from a 2ha plot of Meunier vines planted in 1969, showing unusual concentration and depth. The wine ferments slowly in large oak casks. None of the wines goes through malolactic fermentation, helping to preserve acidity. Unusually, the wine ages on lees with cork stoppers rather than crown caps to allow controlled oxidation.
What else
Some of the vines are farmed biodynamically, but the brothers are not dogmatic; instead their focus is on ensuring all vineyard sources continue to be managed by them personally.
Tasting Notes
Gives the impression of biting into a luscious butter pastry packed with glacé cherries, raspberries and chestnut paste. The structure feels vinous and quite mature: broad with soft acidity and an almost waxy texture. The finish adds cider apples and more creamy chestnuts.
Try It With
Chicken dishes, particularly salt-baked or smoked.
When To Drink
Main course.
Perfect For
A wine lovers' gathering.
Tatler Tip
This should have a coppery colour that's almost like oeil de perdrix, don't be alarmed!
TL/DR
