Bringing together local insight, international reach and relationship-led advice, Standard Chartered helps clients navigate the complexities of building wealth across markets and generations

As wealth becomes increasingly global, managing it requires more than access to financial products. For families with assets in different markets, entrepreneurs balancing business and personal interests, and the next generation preparing to inherit and shape family wealth, connecting opportunities across borders is increasingly important.

For Standard Chartered, this intersection of global connectivity, wealth expertise and personalised advice has long been central to its approach. With over 150 years of presence in Malaysia and an international network spanning Asia, Africa and the Middle East, the Bank supports clients whose financial lives extend beyond a single market. Its four key international wealth hubs in Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and Jersey further strengthen its ability to serve internationally connected affluent clients.

“We have a global affluent continuum to address clients’ needs from mass affluent to private banking, growing with clients as they accumulate and grow their wealth. Our distinctive international network with the four wealth hubs enables us to meet local and cross border needs of affluent clients, with global capabilities and relevant local expertise,” says Harmander Mahal, head of wealth and retail banking for Malaysia and Indonesia at Standard Chartered.

Mahal reveals that Malaysia is Standard Chartered’s second largest market in ASEAN from a wealth perspective. “A study by Knight Frank projects the Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individual population in the country to see a substantial 34.6 per cent growth by 2028, so we will continue to invest in Malaysia,” he says.

Access to international wealth expertise

The Bank’s commitment took a step forward in February 2026 with the opening of Malaysia’s first Priority Private Centre at Equatorial Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. Designed around advice and relationships, the Centre brings together private and international wealth solutions for clients seeking bespoke financial support.

“Establishing the centre proves our long-term commitment to provide access for our clients in the country to trusted advisory, legacy and succession planning, as well as curated global experiences and lifestyle privileges, alongside the Bank’s broader wealth capabilities,” says Mahal, adding that Standard Chartered is positioning itself as a super connector for Asia’s rising class of wealthy individuals.

The Centre is supported by relationship managers and wealth specialists trained through the SC-INSEAD Wealth Academy. Its open architecture approach allows the Bank to curate solutions across investments, bonds and sukuk, structured investments, insurance and takaful, foreign exchange, wealth financing and legacy planning according to a client’s circumstances and risk profile.

“Clients aren’t just looking for investments that will give them returns in the few years after. They’re also looking at passing their wealth to the next generation through long-term wealth planning services that we can provide,” Mahal says.

Connecting wealth across time and place

For many affluent families, the distinction between domestic and international wealth is becoming increasingly blurred. Businesses may operate across several countries, children may study overseas, investments may be held in multiple currencies and family members may live in different parts of the world.

Standard Chartered’s international banking proposition helps clients navigate these practical complexities, from overseas account opening and remittances to the global recognition of Priority & Priority Private status and the management of finances across markets. This is particularly relevant to entrepreneurs and business owners, whose personal wealth is often closely intertwined with the businesses they have built.

“Our products and solutions are designed to cater to the different segments along our client continuum as they grow their wealth through different life stages. For example, our banking relationship with clients could start from when they are young professionals and continue throughout as they get married, buy a house and have children,” Mahal explains.

For families, the question is also how wealth can be transferred responsibly to future generations. In an article by Standard Chartered titled Inheritance meets innovation: The future of wealth in Asia, more than USD5 trillion is expected to move into the hands of heirs under 40 across the region by the end of the decade. Mahal reveals that the Bank is preparing to support the intergenerational wealth transfer in Asia over the next 10 to 20 years. Standard Chartered’s CIO-led insights and specialist expertise provide clients with a longer-term perspective on changing market conditions.

Progress with a human touch

Technology increasingly plays a role in how clients manage their finances, but Standard Chartered sees digital capabilities as complementary to personal advice. “As wealth creation accelerates, it needs to be well managed. With Malaysia being a key market for us, our investments into products and platforms have been quite significant, and we run some of our best platforms here. We also collaborate with product partners to launch first-to-market solutions exclusive to us,” says Mahal.

Platforms including myRM, SmartStocks, LiveFX and Online Unit Trust give clients digital avenues to manage and transact across aspects of their financial lives. The result is an approach that combines the accessibility of digital banking with the depth of a relationship-led wealth proposition.

The relationship extends beyond financial transactions, too. Priority Private’s curated experiences, spanning interests such as padel, golf and pickleball, create opportunities for clients to connect through shared interests, wellbeing and community. These engagements reflect a broader understanding that meaningful relationships are not built solely around financial conversations.

For Standard Chartered, the result is a wealth proposition that combines the scale of an international network with the accessibility of local expertise and the personal dimension of long-term relationships. As Mahal says, “I can confidently say that Malaysia is at a pivotal inflection point as it continues to distinguish itself as a compelling destination, and it’s going to do well as it progresses. As our clients grow their wealth across borders, our affluent continuum and vast international network work in tandem to guide them as they accumulate and grow their wealth.”
