After a big life change resulted in a career pivot, entrepreneur Michelle Chen focused on finding the right balance between work and play to create a fulfilling life
Balance has become something of a buzzword in recent years, albeit one that means something different for everyone. For Michelle Chen, founder of Hong Kong-based skincare line Rare Skin Fuel, balance is about being able to pursue her passions while luxuriating in a life of ease. It’s what allows her to live life to the fullest.
“Being my own boss gives me the freedom to work when I want—and where I want—while also maintaining my role as a present mother,” says Chen. “It’s being able to spend time with my daughter while working from home or attending meetings, and then unwinding in tranquil wellness facilities and with good food and wine.”
For Chen, balance is a key component in her relentless pursuit of excellence. After years of climbing the corporate ladder, she decided to turn a lifelong obsession with beauty into a full-time career—all while continuing to be a hands-on mother and enjoying a robust social life.
Practically, that translates to her “little luxuries” of flexible working hours, taking meetings over fine dining meals or in social settings, and conducting market research and business conversations while jetting around the world. It is this rounded approach that allows her to fulfil her ultimate goal: to make an impact on those around her by leading through example.
