The business leader shares his insights on the importance of trust and human connection, and the pivotal role the bank has played in the legacy of his 152 year-old family business
What do B P de Silva and HSBC have in common?
At first glance, not a lot. One is a venerable legacy jewellery brand and the other is a global banking giant. Yet, look beyond the surface and you will find striking parallels between these two institutions. Both are built on the bedrock of trust—an intangible yet invaluable asset that has been nurtured through decades of consistency, reliability, and an unwavering commitment to their respective clientele.
For B P de Silva, trust is inscribed into every piece of jewellery; each gem symbolising an heirloom to be passed down through generations. And for HSBC, trust manifests in the form of financial security and strategic guidance, providing stability to families and businesses alike. The transparency that underpins both companies is not just a business strategy; it’s a philosophy. And it is also the very reason that has allowed their partnership to thrive for over a century.
“Our family business would not be here today without HSBC,” reflects Sunil Amarasuriya, chairman of B P de Silva Holdings. As a fourth generation leader of one of Singapore’s oldest family businesses, he has certainly witnessed his fair share of ups and downs in the company. One of the most pivotal moments came in the 1970s, when tensions amongst shareholders brought the family business to a critical juncture: to break apart or forge on. Amarasuriya’s father took out a substantial bank loan to buy out the other shareholders, effectively consolidating control and reestablishing stability within the company. The decisive move was made possible by the trust and confidence of a gentleman by the name of Sir William Purves (then CEO of HSBC Singapore) who personally authorised the loan.

The financial lifeline not only reinforced the 141 year-old exclusive partnership between B P de Silva and HSBC but also underscored the importance of strategic collaborations built on a shared vision for long-term success. “The loan really helped to keep the family business together,” says Amarasuriya. “I have taken steps to keep our family united for generations to come, and that we will learn through the trust and transparency that we have built with the bank over the years.”

The art of human connection
The 75 year-old further reflects on the similarities between banks and jewellers, highlighting the growing importance of knowing one’s customer. “The world is constantly changing, and even in today’s digital landscape, the basics remain the same; human connections matter,” he notes. “With its rich history, I’m sure that HSBC will continue to value this part of the relationships they have had with so many families around Asia.”
Indeed, HSBC has nurtured its relationship with B P de Silva, transcending traditional banking dynamics to evolve into a multifaceted collaboration. The bank’s tailored financial advice and strategic guidance have been pivotal in supporting B P de Silva’s diversification efforts, ensuring the company remains resilient and adaptable in an ever-changing market. For instance, the bank’s support for Envipure, an environmental engineering company acquired by B P de Silva Holdings, exemplifies how this partnership has facilitated the company’s growth, leading to a profitable sale in 2019.
Another shining example of this evolved partnership was the collaboration between Risis, a subsidiary of B P de Silva Holdings, and the bank for the HSBC Women’s World Championship in 2023. On the suggestion of Wong Kee Joo, CEO of HSBC Singapore, Risis co-created bespoke HSBC Orchid-designed necklaces for the golf tournament’s champion and participants. The awarded jewellery, Amarasuriya says, encapsulated the passion and ingenuity of sportsmanship, “while taking B P de Silva’s century-long relationship with HSBC to new heights.”
On a personal front, Amarasuriya has been a private HSBC Premier client for over 20 years. Just as how he values human connections in his professional life, this belief extends to how he views relationships between banks and clients. “A lot of corporations now just see people as chess pieces; that they are easily replaceable,” he observes. “That is why I tell my children: The greatest and most important thing in managing companies is to build relationships with people who work with you long-term. That's very special but it's also very rare these days.”
When asked what he believes is the key to a long, meaningful, and successful partnership between banks and clients—be it personal and corporate—Amarasuriya emphasises three factors: open and frank dialogues, prompt mutual updates on developments, and banks’ timely responses to every client’s needs. He appreciates HSBC's ability to consistently meet his evolving requirements, adding “This has been instrumental in fostering trust and confidence to help manage my personal and family finances.”
Amarasuriya’s personal experience with HSBC Premier has been marked by the bank’s proactive approach to wealth management. “The bank has helped to widen my investment choices by continuing to present diversified wealth management products, services, and portfolio options,” he notes. This tailored guidance has enabled Amarasuriya to navigate complex financial decisions while balancing the needs of his family business.

Leaving a lasting legacy
Not just a leader with over 50 years of business acumen, Amarasuriya is also a devoted family man who is deeply committed to preserving the heritage of B P de Silva. That is why his financial goals go beyond simply leaving an inheritance for his three children. He believes that while financial inheritance provides tangible and immediate material security, a legacy offers something far more profound. “Leaving a lasting legacy provides long-term guidance, inspiration, and a sense of purpose,” he explains. “It transcends material wealth and influences future generations through the values and lessons imparted over time.”
Looking ahead, as he passes the baton to the next generation, he envisions a future where B P de Silva Holdings continue to build upon the legacy established 152 years ago through innovation and evolution in the hands of son Rehan and daughter Shanya, who lead their respective companies: The 1872 Clipper Tea Co. and B P de Silva Jewellers. While the company turns its focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, and harnessing new technologies, Amarasuriya asserts that B P de Silva Holdings remains anchored in its foundational values: trust, transparency, and collaboration with partners like HSBC.
Together, B P de Silva and HSBC exemplify how businesses can transcend traditional roles, continue to thrive, and foster innovation and growth—ultimately creating meaningful, lasting impacts in their communities for generations to come.
