For our Eco-Warriors series, June Cheryl “Chaye” Cabal-Revilla, chief finance and sustainability officer of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, discusses the importance of collaboration and a unified approach, why we must safeguard the environment, and how impacting the world begins with oneself
June Cheryl Cabal-Revilla, affectionately known as “Chaye”, was recently named the 2022 Sustainability Leader of Women Leading Change Asia-Pacific. She is responsible for overseeing the launch of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation’s (MPIC) Gabay Advocacies, which concentrates on community development, education, environment, health and sports, livelihood and youth empowerment.
Cabal-Revilla stood out among nominees across the Asia-Pacific region, securing a victory for the Philippines. Her perspective on sustainability, characterised by a holistic and comprehensive approach, guarantees that business priorities encompass economic, environmental, social, and governance (EESG) aspects. This ensures the profound integration of sustainability into MPIC’s business operations and strategies for value creation.

When asked about her experience forming long-term partnerships with private sectors and government agencies to preserve the Philippines’ biodiversity, Cabal-Revilla emphasised the importance of collaboration and a unified approach.
“I think it is only apt that we preserve Philippine biodiversity this way,” she says. “We should work together to preserve the planet. The environment was given to us for a purpose—that’s where we get the food, water and air we breathe. Given that context, we have to take care of the environment.”
For Cabal-Revilla, everyone must safeguard the environment for personal well-being and future generations. She adds that every action contributes to the collective tapestry of life. “It has to start from within, and I think it’s our job to know what needs to be done to create awareness,” she says. “A single act of kindness to someone or a single act of taking care of nature will have a ripple effect—just imagine how many we are. Even one effort will have a massive impact if done together.
“Sustainability has to be embraced personally. Because doing sustainability impacts not just our work but also our families and personal lives.”

In the face of the worsening climate change, Cabal-Revilla stresses the importance of prioritising the preservation of nature as it directly impacts the safety and sustainability of our homes and the world our children will inherit.
“We experience category five storms every now and then. The problem with the Philippines is that we are one of the countries that are most affected by climate change,” she explains. “What’s the point of having a house if it can be destroyed by a storm? What kind of future are we preparing for our children?”
She believes that climate change and its consequences are a series of wake-up calls. She urges Filipinos to engage in environmentally friendly activities together. “We need to start within ourselves—our minds, hearts, bodies and souls. Perhaps these things are happening to make us realise something,” she says.
