From successfully leading his family-run butchery to raising the next generation with intention, Andre Huber reveals that planning for the future is not just about safeguarding wealth, but the values behind it
For Andre Huber, one of life’s most enduring lessons wasn’t learned in a boardroom, but from a story his father told of growing up in the Swiss village of Sellenbüren. His father Ernst noticed as a boy that most villagers, doctors, postmen, even road sweepers, shared meals together at his parents’ restaurant but a wealthy and successful lawyer always dined alone. His father explained that the lawyer looked down on others and cut corners in his work. From that story, Ernst learnt that respect is earned not by status or title but by integrity, humility, and how you treat others.
“That story stuck with me,” says Andre. Today, as executive director of Huber’s Butchery, he carries that ethos forward, leading with the belief that reputation and respect are built through action, and that values matter as much as success.

Balancing legacy with scalability
Huber’s Butchery is a proudly family-run enterprise. Working alongside his father and older brother Ryan has shaped Andre’s leadership style. “From my father, I learned that reputation takes years to build and seconds to lose. He always emphasised doing the right thing, even when no one’s watching,” shares Andre. “And from my brother, I’ve seen how important it is to build systems that outlast individuals and empower people.”
That foundation of integrity and structure continues to guide how Andre leads the business today. He also recognises that heritage alone doesn’t guarantee longevity. As with any family business, balancing legacy with scalability comes with its own unique challenges. “You’re not just growing a company. You’re safeguarding a family name and reputation built over generations,” he explains. “That can make it harder to take bold risks or pivot quickly.”

In order to future-proof the business, the family came to a pivotal realisation: Huber’s Butchery had to evolve into a forward-thinking enterprise that could scale, innovate, and adapt, without losing its soul.
“The family business had to shift from a ‘family-first’ mindset to a ‘business-first with family values’ mindset,” Andre says. That shift involved tough but necessary choices: implementing clear structures, SOPs and KPIs; hiring based on merit; and inviting external perspectives to challenge old assumptions. “Just because something has worked for years doesn’t mean it’s the best way forward,” he notes. By clearly defining roles within the family, the Hubers have also built a leadership model that mirrors any high-performing company but with the added strength of shared family values.
“It’s not always easy, but it’s what ensures longevity,” he says. “That’s how we aim to keep Huber’s thriving, not just for today but for decades to come.”

Life, leadership, and legacy
As much as Andre is focused on preserving the future of the business, another sense of purpose lies closer to home: with his wife and three young children. Becoming a parent, he shares, has reframed his entire outlook on life, leadership, and legacy. “Becoming a parent changed everything,” he reflects. “Before, it was about building a business and achieving personal goals. Now, every decision, regarding work, finances, and even time itself is made through the lens of legacy and protection.”
While he has already begun involving his two older daughters Hayley and Ashley at the butchery during peak seasons, Andre is quick to clarify that his goal isn’t to groom them for succession. Rather, it is to instil in them the values that built the business in the first place: hard work, humility, discipline, and responsibility, no matter their role or where life takes them.
For Andre, part of parenting and legacy planning is giving his children the freedom to chart their own paths, be it carrying the family name through Huber’s Butchery or forging a future elsewhere. “Whether (my children) decide to join the family business is entirely up to them. What’s more important is that the next generation understands the opportunities they have been given and the responsibility that comes with it.”

Preparing the next generation
In Asia, the rise of high-net-worth (HNW) families has brought intergenerational wealth planning into sharper focus. According to the 2024 Wealth Report, around 70,000 HNWIs from the region are poised to pass on approximately US$2.5 trillion over the next decade. In Singapore alone, the “Great Singapore Wealth Transfer” is already underway. A DBS report estimates over S$2 trillion will be passed from Baby Boomers to younger generations in Singapore over the coming years.
For families like the Hubers, legacy isn’t just about wealth—it’s about ensuring future generations are empowered to preserve, grow, and respect what has been built. “I approach financial legacy planning the same way I approach building Huber’s Butchery: with clarity, structure, and purpose,” says Andre. This approach means putting formal plans in place, including a will, trusts, succession strategies, and seeking guidance from professional advisers.
A key part of that framework is life insurance. Singlife Legacy Indexed Universal Life (IUL) plan is one such tool for Andre. “With both life protection and potential for investment growth in one plan, Singlife Legacy IUL offers the coverage I need, while giving me the flexibility to change the life assured for my policy should I choose to. It also helps my policy build value over time.”
Unlike typical traditional insurance plans, Singlife Legacy IUL offers a strategic and measured way for families to preserve their wealth across generations with a guaranteed death benefit and the potential for cash value growth linked to the performance of internationally recognised indices. Furthermore, it can serve as a valuable tool to achieve estate equalisation, helping families to ensure fair division of business assets and/or properties fairly among heirs.

“Ultimately, it’s about creating a resilient framework that supports both the business and personal side of our legacy,” says Andre.

The legacy of lived example
While Andre has taken deliberate steps to secure his family’s future, including formalising estate plans and gently guiding his children, he is most focused on the intangible values that one cannot write into a will or buy with money.
“I started from the bottom: doing deliveries, cleaning cargo, packing sausages… you name it,” he recalls. “It taught me that no role is beneath you and that every contribution matters,” And those are the lessons he hopes to pass on to his children, through lived examples.
Integrity, humility, resilience and the quiet dignity of hard work are the real markers of legacy, he says. “At the end of the day, I want my children to see legacy not as something they’re entitled to, but as something they’re entrusted with,” Huber reflects. “And to carry it forward with purpose, responsibility, and pride.”
