Done with the swiping and endless first dates? We hear there are plenty of fish (or bored apes) in the sea in the world of Web3

It’s date night at the jazz lounge, but you are in loungewear with a VR headset plopped on, adventuring in the metaverse. We all know the dating pool is pretty dry IRL these days, so why not give it a try online?

In the early internet era, people were already making friends and finding lovers through MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online games) from World of Warcraft to Second Life (not to forget the OG, Habbo Hotel). The metaverse, however, is an online space without the gameplay; instead it is a three-dimensional world for users to interact and engage with other avatars and experiences. Since the pandemic, people have continued to increasingly spend time in virtual worlds to connect with others socially.

It has its advantages: With virtual dating, one is forced to defocus on physical attributes, and couples are matched based on their personalities, interests, and lifestyles. Take a chance and explore the Web3 dating scene through NFT apps, tokenised matchmaking, and VR dating to connect with like-minded ‘degens’ —you just might find your virtual lover one click away.

NFT Dating App

The new indicator of wealth isn’t the Bugatti, but of a Bored Ape NFT.  For the coin diggers out there, there are dating apps that are solely based on your NFT collection.

Purportedly, there was the Lonely Ape Dating App, a platform exclusive to holders of a Bored Ape NFT—a collection whose floor price had once hit 153.7ETH. Users were to connect their crypto wallet to verify their Bored Ape ownership, and could then filter potential matches by their NFTs and cryptocurrency net worth. It was initially conceived as a prank, and its subsequent withdrawal threw a light on a real problem—i.e., the gender imbalance in crypto ownership, with an overwhelming ratio of crypto bros to women.

But now there is Ansxer, an actual dating app gaining traction in Thailand and Vietnam that matches individuals by attitude, and not solely by your NFT clique. Users are first to take a personality quiz and purchase their MBTI (Myer-Briggs Type Indicator) NFT which reflects key aspects of their personality. Users are matched by answers and compatibility of personality, which hopefully means better quality matches.

Tokenised Dating

Trust to leave your love life in the hands of someone else? TruYou is a blockchain dating platform that utilises artificial intelligence to match you with potential mates. The platform runs on a tokenised matching system, meaning users are required to invest and hold their Trust Tokens to get allocated matches and to interact with others in the network. TruYou solves modern dating problems of catfishing with a blockchain-based permissive credential system to ensure user verification, along with a ghosting fee penalty that deducts from the user’s balance for inactivity.

You can also get paid to date (and it's not as sus as that sounds!). Tindearn is a Date-to-Earn mobile app where all in-app purchases are 100 per cent redistributed to its users. The blockchain app requires users to stake LIKE tokens (the official currency of Tindearn) to swipe, match and earn rewards. Its algorithm displays candidates based on how many LIKE tokens you hold and your popularity on the app. The staking model redistributes the total $LIKE supply to investors, incentivising holders to engage and earn passive income. It's fair to say that the notorious Tinder Swindler, Simon Leviev, could’ve benefitted from the Web3 dating scene.

In the Metaverse

The beauty of VR and avatar dating lies in the ability to mimic physical presence while forcing one to focus on aspects other than physical appearance. To support this, VR dating services have been created for single VR enthusiasts to meet in fantastical environments.

NeverMet is a VR dating platform that matches avatar profiles with other VR explorers. Similarly, Flirtual is also another platform that matches VR users by the VR equipment they own and favourite social VR apps, and then facilitates dates in the metaverse by holding events such as speed dating and social gatherings.

If singles night isn’t your thing, hop on to Single Town, a virtual space by Match Group—the same company that brought you Match, OkCupid, Tinder and Hinge. Currently being tested in South Korea, singles are represented by their avatars to move around and engage with others in various virtual locations. Over time, users with mutual interests can connect privately as well. With so many fashion and jewellery NFTs to doll your character up, you can take your date to a Christie’s art gallery, maybe even get lucky at the M Social Hotel and eventually get married in the metaverse.
