Ramon Ang Is Recognised For COVID-19 Response Efforts At The Asia CEO Awards 2020

For his contributions amidst the global pandemic, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) president and chief operating officer, Ramon S. Ang, was given the distinction of Lifetime Contributor Award at the Asia CEO Awards 2020

Touted as one of Asia's most prestigious honours in business, the Asia CEO Awards gives credit to all the movers and shakers of the Philippine and Southeast Asian economies. This year, one of our very own, Ramon S. Ang, has been chosen to be the recipient of the Lifetime Contributor Award. This is in conjunction with his visionary leadership and long-term contributions to the country, and most notably includes the magnanimity in his response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"What other goal is more worthwhile than helping our country and ... making it better?" Ang says. "What kind of Filipinos would we be if we do not show malasakit towards each other in this time of great need?"

COVID-19 Response

Ang, who is the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) president and chief operating officer (COO) has been at the helm of a massive outreach program that has amassed over Php13.180 billion in aid. With the help of employees, volunteers, and partner non-profits, SMC has initiated numerous projects to help disadvantaged communities, medical front liners, and even government sectors.

Its COVID-19 response contributions include hundreds of millions in food and medical equipment donations, as well as funding for the government's Libre Sakay program. They have also spearheaded blood donation drives and the construction of temporary quarantine facilities.

Pivoting their business to heed the call of times, SMC had made headlines for repurposing liquor plants to manufacture alcohol instead. They have upped the country's overall testing capacity through distributions of RT-PCR machines and test kits and have recently announced the creation of the RSA Foundation, with which they hope to build a state-of-the-art hospital specialising in infectious disease research.

Economic Stimulus Response

Through foresight and understanding, SMC realises that their COVID-19 response is a necessary, yet not an all-encompassing solution to the times. As such, they have continued to support all major investments, despite the economic downturn.

“Now is not the time to hold back," Ang says. "In fact, now is the time to go all out. Our country’s future depends on it."

With this, the president and COO has continued with infrastructure projects such as the Skyway Extension, Skyway 3, and MRT-7. As of July, the conglomerate has fully completed the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX). They have also worked diligently on proposals to build the more expressways along Quezon province, and have scheduled to break ground for the Manila International Airport in Bulacan. All these are projected to generate millions of direct and indirect jobs nationwide.

Environmental programmes are also underway to rehabilitate the Tullahan-Tinajeros River system, as well as mangroves around Bulacan and Central Luzon. These projects are set to jumpstart the company's flood mitigation program during the time of La Niña.

SMC and Ang's efforts continue today, even as the country slowly fights to flatten the curve. “My humble message for all of you is to stay strong and stay committed to helping out and being a force for positive change in your communities, in your industries, to your employees," Ang says.

The business leader also adds that despite the hardship, there is plenty to be hopeful for in this country. "We have the best minds, the most capable business leaders in the Philippines. Just imagine the collective experience and resources…Together, we can all do so much,” he says.
