The Philippines's very own Masungi Georeserve Foundation has been chosen from among 400 applications from around the world to be shortlisted for the Lush Spring Prize 2021!
Those needing a quick getaway often find themselves heading to Masungi Georeserve Foundation. A popular pick for adventurers, groups, and families, the reserve has quickly become one of the go-to spots north of Manila. This year, they make a fantastic strive for Philippine conservation as a shortlist pick for the Lush Spring Prize.
Masungi Georeserve Foundation has dedicated itself to the restoration of over 3,000 hectares of limestone formations. This is to benefit the endangered biodiversity that calls Rizal home. It is also one of the largest reforestation efforts in the country—and it's no laughing matter. Administrators and reservationists often find themselves battling very serious threats that include timber poaching, large-scale mining, and harassment from quarriers. Fortunately, the hardworking team behind the reserve has managed to continuously engage with surrounding communities—including indigenous members and even those previously involved in illegal activities—to come together and provide sustainable livelihoods.

For this, the Lush Spring Prize acknowledges its efforts in regeneration. A joint venture between Lush Cosmetics and Ethical Consumer, the prize itself aims to support those who are "actively involved in restoring all systems they are a part of". It is now in its fourth year; within this time, they have managed to distribute over six hundred thousand pounds (£600,000) to deserving projects.
Under the 2021 cycle, 54 groups were shortlisted from a pool of 400 applicants from 81 different countries. There were a variety of projects: from grassroots campaigns to businesses to indigenous groups, academics, and global solidarity networks. All of them worked to further various causes that supported life, restored the ecosystem, built upon sustainability, or strengthened resilience and circular economies.
The Masungi Georeserve Foundation has found itself shortlisted under the Lush Spring Prize's Young Projects category. These include young communities, groups, organisations, businesses, or networks between one to five years old. The prize money, which can reach up to £20,000, will help in improving their nascent ecological and social systems.

Other categories include Intentional Projects, Established Projects, Influence Award, Ancient and Indigenous Wisdom Award, and Youth in Permaculture Award. The final event and awards ceremony will be held online between 23 to 31 October 2021, as a lead-up to COP26. Winners will be decided on by a panel of 12 judges.
