From Feeding Hong Kong to More Good, these local NGOs are trying to reduce the city’s food waste problem by collecting surplus food and finding ways to redistribute it to underprivileged people
With a staggering 3,300 tonnes of food discarded daily, food waste represents about 30 per cent of all municipal solid waste generated in Hong Kong, according to a recent report published by the government’s Environmental Protection Department. Households are the prime culprits, tossing out 71 kilograms of food per person yearly, while wet markets and supermarkets squander tonnes of food every day. At the same time, over 1.4 million people live below the poverty line or around 20 per cent of the city’s 7.5 million inhabitants, two-thirds of whom are in a state of food insecurity. Thankfully, a few charities have stepped up to the challenge of addressing this environmental and social issue in creative ways. Here are five of them to support.

1. Foodlink Foundation
A food bank pioneer in Hong Kong since 2001, Foodlink Foundation collects an average of 665 tonnes of safe-to-eat surplus food from hotels, restaurants and supermarkets every year to redistribute to underprivileged communities through its charity partners. The organisation also maintains a store in Kwun Tong to store fresh produce and packaged food that low-income families can pick up free of charge. So far, it has helped provide over 1.6 million meals to those in need, reducing food waste and “replacing hunger with a smile”, as per the charity’s website.
