LVMH Moët Hennessy, the French luxury company behind brands like Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior has committed to help French authorities by manufacturing hand sanitiser in its laboratories, rather than perfumes, and providing it to hospitals in need as many attempt to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“LVMH will use the production lines of its perfume and cosmetic brands… to produce large quantities of hydroalcoholic gels from Monday,” the company said in a statement, according to a Reuters report. “These gels will be delivered free of charge to the health authorities.”

The hydroalcoholic gel, or hand sanitiser, will be delivered to French authorities and the  Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, which collectively treats more than 8 million patients each year, starting this week. LVMH expects it will initially produce a minimum of 12 tons of the hydroalcoholic gel by the end of the week.

“Through this initiative, LVMH intends to help address the risk of a lack of product in France and enable a greater number of people to continue to take the right action to protect themselves from the spread of the virus,” the company said in a press release.

LVMH’s move comes as a response to the global shortage of alcohol-based sanitizers in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The FDA has also encouraged licensed pharmacists and physicians to create their own hand sanitizers to offset the rise of DIY-sanitisers.

The luxury brand also pledged 1 million Chinese RMB to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation this past January, which went toward replenishing medical supply shortages in Wuhan. Previously, the brand made contributions toward the Notre Dame Cathedral fire restoration in Paris as well as to combat fires in the Amazon rainforest.
