Almost 8,000 children and 4,000 plus women were seen at the Women and Children Protection Units (WCPUs) last year.  While one abused child is one too many, the reality is that there are millions of abused children in the country”, said Child Protection Network (CPN) Foundation Inc. Executive Director Dr. Bernadette Madrid.

According to the National Baseline Study on Violence against Children (NBS-VAC) in the Philippines, 3 out of 5 children have experienced physical abuse, psychological abuse, and bullying while 1 out 5 has been sexually violated.

In actual numbers, it means that if there are 40.4 million children in the Philippines, 26.7 million are physically abused, 23.9 million are psychologically abused, and 6.9 million are sexually abused.

NBS-VAC also shows that majority of the children do not tell anyone about the abuse.  Less than 10% disclosed the abuse and for sexual abuse only 1.6% disclosed the incident. A delay in seeking care puts the child at risk for continuing abuse or repeated abuse.

The CPN Foundation is at the forefront of the fight against child abuse in the Philippines. The Child Protection Network Foundation, Inc. is composed of doctors, social workers, lawyers, police, and volunteers who are dedicated to ensuring that all children in the Philippines are protected from the many faces of abuse.

This network for the treatment of abused children has grown from one child protection unit in the Philippine General Hospital in 1997 to currently 84 WCPUs in 48 provinces and 9 cities in the Philippines.  The goal of CPN is to have at least 1 WCPU in a government hospital in each province ensuring that every abused child is treated with compassion and competence they truly deserve.

The trunk show is now its 4th year. A big percentage of the purchases will be generously donated to the CPN Foundation. Last year, the show raised enough money to help 61 abused children obtain one year of medical and psychosocial help.
