Find out how being a non-profit school delivers an enormous benefit to the students and the community
Non-profit. Two small words can make a BIG difference in the educational experience for students and families. With the rapid growth in the number of for-profit international schools in Malaysia, Julia Love, admissions director at The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) urges parents to research whether the school they are considering for their child is 'non-profit' or 'for-profit'.

“Selecting a school is a major investment in your child’s future so it’s important to ask lots of questions. The difference a non-profit school offers can be felt across a range of areas including leadership, governance, parental involvement, decision-making, and ultimately, of course, where the revenue generated by your child’s tuition fees is spent,” says Love. “The reality is that many families don’t fully appreciate these benefits until their child is enrolled and they can see for themselves the difference it can make.

“ISKL’s non-profit status means there are no competing agendas about where funds are directed and it makes a very real difference for parents to know that the revenue from tuition fees is invested into recruiting the best international educators and creating the best possible learning environment and experiences for our students.”

For ISKL’s students, the experience includes the unique opportunity to participate in the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asia Schools (IASAS) sporting tournaments and cultural conventions. With a four-decade history, IASAS comprises six non-profit international schools from across Southeast Asia including Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, and Taipei as well as Kuala Lumpur. Together these leading schools create a forum for students to showcase their talent, passion and creativity within an environment of cultural competition.

Recognised as one of the premier international school activities and athletics conferences in the world, IASAS encompasses three athletic seasons with 13 tournaments as well as Cultural Conventions featuring Dance, Drama and Tech, Art and Film, Music, Forensics and Debate as well as Math, Model United Nations, Chess, and Service.
Member schools host IASAS events on a rotating basis, with ISKL the host school for the 2023 IASAS Swimming Championships in February, and the Dance, Drama, and Tech component of one of the four Cultural Conventions in March. ISKL student and member of the swim team Anne shares her experience, “IASAS was an incredible experience where we all met incredible people from other schools. I will always remember the special moments that highlighted the spirit of IASAS. I strongly advise everyone to have fun and appreciate the whole experience because it is something you will remember for the rest of your life.”
ISKL rugby player Oscar, who competed at the Jakarta Intercultural School, agreed, “IASAS, no matter the sport or activity, is one of the unique experiences that ISKL provides. Embrace the experience, you will miss it the second you leave!”
Parents also benefit from the IASAS experience that unites the entire community. “The standard of competition is remarkable and the atmosphere is truly electric,” says ISKL parent Katherine Plumley. Also, a member of ISKL’s PTA team that helps to create a warm welcome for visiting teams and families, Plumley continues, “It’s a really wonderful mix of cross-cultural camaraderie not just for students but for the whole community with ISKL families hosting students from visiting schools. You really have a sense of the amazing international connection we share as IASAS member schools.

“Every part of our community gets involved, from supporters dressed in their school’s cheer gear to elementary students waving handmade support posters. It is so fun to see ISKL’s Panther spirit in action and a wonderful example for our younger students of the amazing opportunities that await them in high school.”
IASAS is just one of many examples the ISKL non-profit difference can make and one of the many unique experiences designed to nurture the passions, values, and competencies of ISKL’s students as they shape their path as global citizens.
