The Singapore-based retinal surgeon and associate professor leverages AI to enhance patients’ journeys in eye health

Dr Daniel Ting, a senior consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre and director of the AI Office at SingHealth, has been recognised for his groundbreaking work in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into ophthalmology.

His recent innovation focuses on the use of AI for retinal imaging, particularly targeting blinding diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

On September 27, he was named the winner of the 2024 Young Scientist Award—one of the categories under the President’s Science and Technology Awards. The Singapore National Academy of Science presents the annual awards and is supported by the National Research Foundation.

Ting’s AI system has been integrated into national diabetic retinopathy screening programmes, leading to a 90 percent reduction in screening costs and a fivefold increase in screening capacity. Selena+, the deep learning AI system designed to detect potentially threatening eye conditions, has screened over 500,000 patients globally and operates in multiple countries, including Singapore, Oman and Australia.

In addition to his contributions to ophthalmology, Ting was recently selected as one of the Top 100 AI Thought Leaders by H2O.ai. Among the honourees are prominent figures such as Fei-Fei Li of Stanford University, Yann LeCun of Meta and Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia. This accolade further solidifies Ting’s status as a global leader in AI-driven healthcare innovation.

Ting says “I am deeply honoured to be recognised among the world’s top 100 AI thought leaders, alongside distinguished and prominent figures worldwide. This accolade inspires me to continue advancing pioneering AI and digital technologies, with the aim of enhancing patient care and elevating Singapore’s homegrown innovations to a global scale.”
