Here is a shortlist of five titles recommended by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates that highlight important global and societal issues

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is an avid reader who attributes his success to this passion. According to media reports, he reads around 50 books yearly—approximately one a week—and often brings a bag full of books on his vacations.

Gates encourages young people who aspire to positively impact the world to cultivate a reading habit and find a skill they enjoy. “You don’t really start growing old until you stop learning. Each book teaches me something new or offers a different perspective. I was fortunate to have parents who promoted reading. It sparks a sense of curiosity about the world, which I believe has propelled me throughout my career and in my work with my foundation,” he told US magazine Time.

Since stepping down from the Microsoft board of directors in 2020, Gates has dedicated himself to philanthropic efforts focused on pressing global issues like climate change, global health and education. We have compiled a list of five thought-provoking books that he has recommended on his blog, Gates Notes

This week marks the start of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (Cop29), which will continue until November 22. During this event, leaders from government, business and civil society will come together to explore ways to accelerate efforts to tackle the climate crisis. One of the books Gates recommended, Not the End of the World by Hannah Ritchie, is a timely read.

As Bill Gates writes, it’s often easier for people to stay updated on the latest climate news rather than fully understand its long-term trends. Ritchie’s book, filled with data and charts, takes a broader view of the crisis. She illustrates the progress humanity has made in various fields, such as reducing child mortality and improving access to vital resources, contrasting the typical “doomsday” narrative often associated with climate change.

The author also proposes actionable solutions for stakeholders to continue addressing climate issues. Gates particularly resonates with Ritchie’s call for wealthier nations to shoulder more responsibility in investing in and deploying innovations with poorer countries.

Naomi Alderman’s science-fiction novel The Power delves into the consequences of women suddenly acquiring the ability to emit powerful electric shocks from their bodies. As Gates notes, rather than leading to a utopian society that celebrates gender equality, the world spirals into violent social upheaval.

Gates’s daughter, Jennifer Gates, recommended this book to him. He writes that the book provoked questions about whether gender bonds us more than other factors like family ties or national identity and whether power can corrupt anyone. This novel also reminded him of the challenges women still face today and highlighted the ongoing necessity to strive for gender equality.

American educator Salman Khan founded Khan Academy, a free online non-profit educational platform reaching over 150 million learners worldwide. He is also a friend of Bill Gates, having been interviewed by him on his podcast. In his book Brave New Words, he discusses how artificial intelligence could revolutionise education and how it is unlike other edtech solutions that have made a limited impact in classrooms.

Khan notes that AI can potentially disrupt education in various ways, many of which are already unfolding. This includes providing on-demand, personalised and creative learning experiences and allowing teachers to devote more time to fostering relationships with their students by taking care of routine administrative tasks. However, there are challenges to scaling this impact, such as ensuring student privacy and providing access to devices and internet connectivity for all students.

Infectious Generosity, authored by Chris Anderson, the man behind the renowned non-profit Ted, delves into the nuances of philanthropy in today’s digital world. He highlights that communication technology is a double-edged sword: while it connects people and raises awareness about the struggles others face, it also can potentially drive us apart through the spread of misinformation. To tackle these challenges, he offers a roadmap to harness technology’s power to foster greater generosity.

Though Gates acknowledges that some of Anderson’s recommendations may be difficult to implement, he finds the author’s vision for creating a more generous world infectious and inspiring. It also aligns with his beliefs about how the digital revolution can help address humanity’s pressing challenges.

As a self-proclaimed introvert, Gates found David Brooks’s book’s premise—that conversational and social skills can be learned and improved—refreshing and informative. He writes that How to Know a Person is more than a guide to better conversation but a blueprint for “a more connected and humane way of living”.

The book encourages readers to be more engaged in daily interactions, such as asking thoughtful questions with genuine curiosity and actively listening to what others want to share. It also sheds light on how the growing sense of loneliness and disconnection in the digital age could lead to social and political divisions, making the formation of genuine connections more crucial than it may seem.
