At an intimate Tatler and Rolex evening in Manila, legendary oceanographer and Rolex Testimonee Sylvia Earle reflected on exploration, urgency and why the next decade matters most

Distinguished marine biologist and conservationist Sylvia Earle headlined an intimate evening of conversation, cocktails and dinner on January 29 at Shangri-La The Fort, Manila.

The evening began with a welcome from Irene Martel Francisco, Managing Director of Tatler Philippines, who expressed the publication’s privilege in hosting Earle. “We are very privileged and honoured to have the very respected and renowned Sylvia Earle,” Francisco said. “Sylvia is on the cover of all Tatlers this February. This wonderful lady spent decades exploring the Blue Planet and truly leads the world in exploring and conserving the world’s oceans.”

The event drew a curated audience of local conservation leaders, cultural figures and philanthropists to hear Earle, the Tatler February regional cover star, also popularly known as “Her Deepness”, reflect on her decades-long career in ocean science and advocacy. Among those in attendance were Anna Oposa, Gab Mejia, Cherrie Atilano, Cat Triviño, Bryan McClelland, Nikki Sevilla, Marc Nelson, sisters Ann Dumaliang and Billie Dumaliang, among other prominent Filipino environmental advocates.

Earle, a Rolex Testimonee since 1982 and the first woman to be appointed a National Geographic Explorer in Residence, spoke candidly about her lifelong work exploring the seas and rallying global support for marine conservation. Her mission has been amplified through Mission Blue, the initiative she founded to champion marine Protected Areas around the world, known as Hope Spots, ecologically critical regions considered essential for the long‑term health of the ocean.

In conversation, Earle traced her path from early fascination with the ocean to groundbreaking scientific expeditions and sustained efforts to broaden public understanding of the marine environment. Guests learned how her work has been central to advocating greater protections for the world’s oceans, where only a small fraction of waters is currently safeguarded, and the role that partnership with organisations such as Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative plays in supporting long‑term conservation efforts.

Earle underscored the urgency of accelerating ocean protection, aligning with the global conservation target of safeguarding 30 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2030, a goal now widely recognised by policy leaders, scientists and environmental networks.

Attendees were offered a rare opportunity to engage directly with Earle’s perspective on the ocean’s ecological significance, the impact of climate change on marine systems, and the importance of collective action in shaping a more resilient future for the planet’s blue heart.

The Manila evening celebrates Earle’s work and the Rolex’s commitment around environmental advocacy, reinforcing her legacy as a scientist and the contemporary relevance of ocean conservation in global discourse.
