Thanks to their contributions to the arts and entertainment industry, many renowned celebrities have been honoured with honorary doctorates from some of the world’s most prestigious universities.
While honorary degrees may not carry academic weight in the traditional sense, they are still seen as a prestigious recognition celebrating an individual's outstanding contributions, cultural influence, and commitment to their craft or profession. These honours often acknowledge the kind of impact that cannot be measured solely by formal education. Alongside pioneering scientists and visionary business leaders who have driven innovation and growth, many prominent figures in the entertainment world have also been recognised for the ways in which their work has inspired, uplifted and shaped society.
Sandra Oh: Our greatest lessons come from the things that make us uncomfortable
In June 2025, Korean-American actress Sandra Oh, best known for her role in Grey’s Anatomy, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Dartmouth College.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the actress shared a personal insight: the moments that push us beyond comfort are often those that shape us most. For her, such moments offer the best opportunities for growth and reflection, an unavoidable part of life.
She believes that by learning to confront what unsettles us, we open the door to unexpected discoveries. In that process, we also strengthen our inner resolve enabling us to face challenges while staying true to ourselves.
Sandra Oh also highlighted the importance of kindness, particularly in an increasingly volatile world. She believes kindness offers a path through pain, helping us heal and carry on. It’s a way to face harsh realities without compromising our humanity.
Taylor Swift: Past judgments and mistakes do not define your worth
In May 2022, pop icon Taylor Swift received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from New York University. Her speech at the ceremony resonated deeply, much like her music, which continues to inspire millions.
Swift’s 23-minute address was a blend of humour, heartfelt emotion and practical wisdom, shaped by personal experience. She spoke candidly about perfectionism, isolation, public scrutiny, and the value of pursuing your passions. She reflected on the need to make peace with the past as we step into new chapters. Letting go of resentment, tuning out negativity from former classmates or ex-partners, and distancing oneself from toxic habits are, in her words, ways to invite joy and simplicity into life.

Swift also emphasised how past criticism and mistakes had helped her grow. Facing public backlash early in her career was challenging, but it taught her resilience and the importance of safeguarding her personal life.
She also asserts that in crucial moments, you may not know which choice is right. The singer says that we make decisions based on our intuition, our deepest desires and fears, our scars and our dreams. Sometimes, we will not make the perfect choice and things will get messy. Challenges will always come our way. The important thing is that we can pick ourselves up, learn from them and become more mature and resilient because of those mistakes.
Tony Leung: Consider yourself a beginner for every new project
In November 2024, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His wife, actress Carina Lau, was present at the ceremony.
Tony Leung is widely recognised as one of Asia’s most acclaimed actors, with works celebrated for their artistic merit, most notably Happy Together (1997) and In the Mood for Love (2000), both directed by Wong Kar-wai. In 2023, he became the first Hong Kong actor to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
At the ceremony, Leung delivered a speech in English and reflected on his 40-year journey in acting. He also shared the principle that guides his work: approach every project as if you are starting anew. Viewing himself as a beginner allows him to maintain a fresh perspective, rather than falling into the complacency that can come with experience. He cautioned against letting ego interfere with growth, as it may hinder progress. He also encouraged graduates to follow their passions, acknowledging that the path is seldom easy.

At Duke University in 2009, during her honorary degree address, Winfrey spoke about the transformative power of compassion. She recounted stories of people she had helped, and how those experiences in turn helped her find purpose and joy. Her message focused on the value of reaching out to others with empathy and courage, as a way to build a more meaningful life together.
She also spoke about the importance of decision-making, suggesting that each choice we make helps define who we are and what we stand for. In any situation, there is always the question of whether to follow your own path or go along with the crowd. Winfrey believes that decisions should be rooted in personal intuition, rather than influenced by external opinions. For her, intuition is a trusted guide that quietly knows what is right. Her advice: trust yourself, and do not let others drown out that inner voice.
