“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside awakens.” —Carl Gustav Jung
To celebrate the 15th year milestone of the Carl Jung Circle Center, local and foreign experts in Depth Psychology come together to hold an eight-month (24-day) course called “Kayamanan: A Certificate Course on Deep Stories of the Self.” Focusing on the Jungian principles of the psyche and how narratives shape one’s life, this course seeks to view symbols and myths in the Philippine context from the perspective of depth psychology.
The course allows people to find new dimensions and meaning within their work and lives as they learn to bridge the richness of the Self with the world. In CJCC’s maiden certificate course, Kayamanan responds to the collective need to return authenticity and awareness to the soul of the Filipino.

As defined by Ruby Villavicencio-Paurom, president of the Carl Jung Circle Center, the Kayamanan course is a “journey with three distinct areas of learning that propel the enrolee to look inward, find inspirations to bridge conscious patterns with influential unconscious prompts through age-old handles of story-telling in epics and mythology, and discover pathways for finding meaning in life and living out this meaning.”
The CJCC boasts a line-up of certified Philippine professionals, each a leader in their area of expertise. Joining the faculty, led by Rose Marie Yenko, CJCC chairman emeritus, are Dr Dido Gustilo Villasor, Dr Rene Samaniego, Bernadette Nepomuceno, Sophie Sim-Bate, Joji Racelis, Dr Steve Aizenstat, Dr Maren Hansen, Dr Jennifer Leigh Selig, and Dr Dennis Slattery of the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Sta. Barbara, California.
To learn more about the Carl Jung Circle Center, Depth Psychology, and the topics tackled in Kayamanan, Tatler Philippines had the opportunity to chat briefly with Rose Yenko, chair emeritus of the CJCC.

"The Carl Jung Circle Center is an association of individuals, practitioners and professionals from different fields - psychology, medicine, education, business, media, the arts, [and] development work - with the mission of advancing the Depth Psychology of Carl Jung among Filipinos," Yenko explains.
Jungian Psychology deals with the psychology of the psyche, which encompasses the conscious and the unconscious. The conscious comprises the thoughts, memories, and emotions that a person is aware of. On the other hand, the unconscious is everything a person is unaware of and can include temporarily forgotten information, repressed memories, and more. It is a complex collection of thoughts, feelings, and memories."
"The unconscious is such a vast realm," she continues, "And our conscious can remain unaware of its dynamics and influence on our lives."

'The Kayamanan: A Certificate Course on Deep Stories of Self,' as Yenko explains it, is an eight-month journey into discovering and exploring the stories within the layers of the self. The course will cover three major subjects: individuation, the layered psyche and the archetypes; a life of myth and symbols; and eros and logos: bridging the world.
With three fascinating subjects to be discussed in depth during the course, one would be able to end each class with a new insight into one's life or oneself. Yenko was more than happy to share some of the possible takeaways for those who would enrol in the course.
- You are who you say you are. Likewise, you are also who you say you are not.
- Being an introvert is normal. It may make you different, but you are healthy and normal.
- Psychological differences in viewing life do not make you right and the other person wrong. Both have concrete gifts to contribute.
- Do you keep on falling in love with the same kind of man? Woman? What keeps you in this cycle? You may be in the grip of a complex. Look at the patterns in your life.
- What is your nature? In the world of archetypes, are you a natural wanderer? An artist? A warrior? A lover? A builder? An innovator? A mother? A protector? A hero? An anti-hero?
- Myths, fairy tales and folk stories are powerful teachers of responding to life, choices that present themselves in imagination and symbols. Narratives of these stories can mirror in us our own depths.
- What ails your soul? For individuation to occur, pay attention to the murmurings of one's inner movement, internal tension, and the desire to grow into oneself.
- Tend to your soul. Tend the soul of your community, country, and planet Earth. Tending is tuning in and appreciating the invisible worlds beyond the noise.
These are only a few of the possible takeaways from the course, and each of them highlights a realisation. What a person will learn about their psyche at this stage in their life is near limitless, and so the course explores and reveals the layered deep stories that reside within oneself, just waiting to be uncovered.
'The Kayamanan: A Certificate Course on Deep Stories of Self' starts on July 26, 2022, and will be conducted primarily online with one face-to-face meeting held every month, along with a face-to-face graduation ceremony in April 2023. Enrolees to the course shall receive a certificate in-depth story-telling from the Carl Jung Circle Center at the conclusion of the course. The deadline for application is June 30, 2022.
