Connie Wong shares her success story with She’s Mercedes, a collective of inspiring, empowered women

“What drives me? It’s not the memory of a single performance, or a piece of music; it’s an attitude.” Connie Wong has overcome her fair share of obstacles. Born with a congenital deficiency, Wong was born with three full fingers, and underwent countless surgeries as a young child.

Despite these challenges in her formative years, Wong began playing piano aged 13, and her passion grew from there. “These three fingers stand for three words to live by: never give up,” she says. One of Wong’s own compositions, A Wonderful Journey, reflects her journey. “It has both quiet and energetic sections; it’s like our lives, with ups and downs.”

It’s an ethos shared by Mercedes-Benz. She’s Mercedes—a global initiative founded in 2015 to connect empowered women—celebrates women whose profound influence has shaped their field, from racing champions to glass-ceiling shattering finance professionals, and nearly everything in between. Wong’s resilience and determination stand her in good company with her She’s Mercedes peers.

Wong hopes to inspire the next generation through her work as a teacher and mentor, working with young musicians. “Like me, many of my students are on the road less travelled,” she explains.

“There have been many times that I’ve wanted to give up,” says Wong. “But each failure teaches you something.” These days, she says, she focuses less on the notes that she can’t play, and more on sharing the story—and the person—behind the music.

That’s not to say that Wong is immune to little stresses. “I used to feel like even the small things were too difficult to overcome,” she says. But now, when life proves overwhelming, she embraces the calming influence of nature. “It helps me recharge and fills me with a new sense of energy.”

Ultimately, says Wong, whether it’s a love of nature, of teaching, or of performing itself, it comes down to passion. “Stepping onto the stage,” she says, “I am transported. I’ve found what drives me.”
