Why the British international school in Malaysia remains one of the best in the country

The Alice Smith School, the first British international school in Malaysia, is once again recognised at the annual International School Awards. This year, the school’s Higher Education team was nominated as one of the finalists for the Pathways to Continued and University Education award at the International School Awards 2022. In 2021, the school won the International School Award in the Inclusion category with their initiative: ‘KLASS Student-Support Programme: empowering students to lead on in-class support’.

While the Alice Smith School has maintained outstanding academic records over the years and 95 per cent of its students have gained places at their first choice university including Oxford, Cambridge and Yale, the school is aware that this alone isn’t sufficient. According to its very own alumni, job satisfaction hinges on the students’ understanding of their own skills, interests and passions.

With the Future Pathways initiative, students are encouraged to develop higher self-awareness of their own skills, interests, abilities and decision-making skills to help them make fulfilling higher education and career choices once they graduate from Alice Smith School. An essential skill for students to have for life, self-awareness will also help students to navigate their evolving goals and ambitions over time due to personal growth, technology and economic factors. It will help them to evaluate their own competencies, skills and desires, to understand in which areas they can and should develop in order to help them achieve their full potential.

Delivered to all year groups from Primary to Sixth Form, through lectures that share the most up-to-date and relevant statistics and information as well as one-to-one interviews with experienced higher education staff, the Higher Education and Career advice programme provides students with in-depth understanding and skills to navigate the changes in their academic and career journey. Overseen by three full-time professionals in collaboration with teachers, the school’s alumni and other providers such as regional career experts, the Future Pathways initiative not only focused their efforts on helping students to cultivate self-awareness but also to broaden their awareness of higher education choices and careers available globally, plus develop skills like adaptability, emotional intelligence, resourcefulness as well as knowledge in technology and digital intelligence.

Ultimately, this initiative is aimed at equipping students with the skills, understanding and resilience they will need as adults in a rapidly changing world as documented in the 4th Industrial Revolution analysis. As sole focus on strong academic performance proves to be insufficient to secure a competitive career advantage, the Future Pathways initiative prepare students to succeed well into the future, even beyond university graduation.
