The up and coming designer is taking Indonesian fashion to Paris

In the What Matters To Me series, a Generation T honouree describes what they do, why they do it, and why it matters.

A distinctive talent on the rise, Peggy Hartanto is redefining Indonesian fashion worldwide with her eponymous house, which appeals to the sophisticated, intelligent urban woman. After showcasing her collection in Paris, Peggy is now ready to take on new challenges as an internationally acclaimed designer. Here, she describes her work in her own words.

I realised I wanted to pursue fashion when I was little. My mum and grandma always made custom clothes for me and my twin, Petty. Aside from that, I made clothes for my dolls using leftover fabrics from my mum and grandma. You could say that from a young age, fashion came as second nature to me.

I studied in Australia, where the laid-back, minimalistic style influenced me a lot in shaping my design aesthetics. My internship at Collette Dinnigan, which led to a job offer there in the production, QC and dispatch departments, gave me valuable lessons for setting up my own label.

You could say that from a young age, fashion came as second nature to me.

Going to Paris to show our collections was already a part of the plan when we incorporated the label in 2015. Since then we have been committed to growing the label, and Paris is the biggest showroom for high-end fashion. Our collection is currently available in 13 countries, but it’s our dream to expand even further.

The SS19 collection is inspired by the mysterious world of Pandora, from James Cameron’s Avatar. Orbiting the sun closest to our solar system, Pandora has bizarre flora and fauna living on its surface, similar to Earth but more vibrant with its richness of colours. The lower gravity makes much of its biota weirdly shaped and with proportions that appear strange to humans.
