On October 19, we hosted the second edition of The Catalyst Series.
Taking place over a private lunch in Tatler House Hong Kong, the series provides Gen.T honourees with an opportunity to learn through an open, moderated discussion with their peers as well as experts from J.P. Morgan Private Bank, with whom we have co-organised the series.
This edition featured Jean Sung, Head of The Philanthropy Centre, Asia at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. She was joined by Gen.T honourees in the non-profit sector, including charity founders and directors of family foundations, to discuss the future of philanthropy in Asia.
Topics discussed over lunch included generational shifts in giving, the need to professionalise the philanthropy sector, why family foundations need to be run like a business, and how to solve the social capacity conundrum.
Attendees at the lunch included Victoria Wisniewski Otero, founder and CEO of Resolve Foundation; Serena Fan, founder and executive director of Children’s Discovery Museum; Elizabeth Dearborn Hughes, co-founder and CEO of Akilah Institute and Davis College; Fion Leung, co-founder and CEO of Time Auction; Joanna Lui Hickox, director of the GEG Foundation; and Jessica Cheng, assistant general manager of the Lui Che Woo Prize.
“Don’t treat the symptoms, go to the root. That’s where the real impact is,” said Sung over lunch, as the guests shared their experiences and found common ground, such as the operational challenges and opportunities running an NGO in Hong Kong. Another highlight was a charming story Sung told of the time she raised her first million dollars for a charity, which while being full of insight, also had the table laughing along.
We are hosting three more Catalyst Series events in 2021. If you’re a Gen.T honouree and you’d like to apply to attend, email editor@generationt.asia.
