From her upcoming album to how she knew she wanted a career in music, here is everything you need to know about Singaporean musician Jasmine Sokko

Singaporean electro-pop singer Jasmine Sokko is best known for her unique vocals and trademark face mask—worn to ensure that she reaches people through her music alone.

The singer is also a producer and songwriter and has created tracks in both English and Mandarin. She was the first Singaporean to win Best Southeast Asian Act at the MTV EMAs, solidifying her path as Singapore’s next rising star.

Here are four things you need to know about Sokko.

1. She always knew she wanted a career in music

Speaking to CNA Luxury, Sokko shared that she knew she wanted to be “rock star” ever since she was young. “As I got older, I noticed that my friends’ dreams were becoming more realistic. Suddenly, they wanted to become doctors and lawyers, but I still wanted to be a rock star. I thought I would grow out of it, but I never did,” she said.

2. She was featured on a billboard in New York’s Times Square

A significant milestone for the singer, Sokko was recently featured on a billboard in Times Square. The billboard was part of Spotify’s Equal initiative, which works to showcase women musicians from around the world. Sokko was part of the streaming service’s Singapore and Malaysia playlist.

“I was that little girl who looked up to many powerful women figures, for they affirmed [to] me that everyone is deserving of every chance to achieve their dreams. Though the road to genuine equality is a long and constantly shifting one, it is an absolute honour to be a part of it,” Sokko shared on Instagram.

3. She makes an effort to give back and support new artists

“What nobody tells people who are beginners—and I really wish someone had told this to me…” Sokko wrote on Instagram, in a post penned for aspiring artists, “is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple of years you make stuff, it’s just not that good… But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase… You’ve just got to fight your way through it.”

4. Her upcoming music will be “a lot darker”

Since the release of her first Mandarin EP, Made In Future, Sokko has been expanding her music to better fit her as she grows. Her second English EP is due to be released this year. Sokko told CNA Luxury that it will be a “rebirth of Jasmine Sokko”. “I’m straying away from what I used to do, which kind of scares me to be honest. People can expect the unexpected,” she said.
