Meet five entrepreneurs from Indonesia on our list of 400 Leaders of Tomorrow

We revealed the 400 honourees on the Gen.T List 2020 at unveiling events across the region.

To give you a taste of what to expect from the 55 young leaders on the list from Indonesia, here are five honourees that represent the tenacity and talent of all the honourees from the country this year.

For breaking through globally as a singer-songwriter

Singer

Originally a child star who first won fame as an actor, Agnez Mo has come into her own as a musician. The singer and songwriter has released five albums since 2003 and has shot to global stardom, winning more than 100 international awards for her work, and collaborating with stars such as French Montana, Timbaland and Steve Aoki.

Jasmine Tabalujan Chong

For reaching the top tier of the design world

Founder and creative director, Jasmine Chong

After moving to the US to study, Indonesian-Malaysian designer Jasmine Tabalujan Chong worked for revered brands including Anna Sui, Marchesa, Tory Burch, Thakoon, Halston and Ann Taylor. She established her eponymous New York-based label in 2015, quickly becoming a New York Fashion Week regular. In March 2020 she was one of the competitors on Amazon Prime’s fashion design reality show Making The Cut.

For shining a light on the importance of sexual health

Aids activist and founder, Real Talk By Andrea

Determined to break the stigmas that allow sexually transmitted infections to run rife in Indonesia, Andrea Gunawan speaks regularly to her 200,000-plus Instagram followers about the importance of sexual health and trust in relationships. By addressing local taboos including HIV/Aids and contraception, she has helped countless people. Her support group Real Talk by Andrea partners with psychologists, doctors and financial advisors to deliver seminars, workshops and training programmes around the country.

For taking Indonesian media to stratospheric heights

Founder and CEO, New Media Folder

Some journalists take buyouts—others form media empires. Former reporter Hadi Ismanto founded Manual Jakarta, a sharp, honest online lifestyle-entertainment magazine by and for those in the know. He bookended this with Malt Studio, a creative design firm, and Third Company, a social marketing agency, all under the New Media Folder holding. Winner of Mumbrella Asia’s 2019 Media Brand of the Year, Manual also puts out a biannual print edition.

For transforming language learning and addressing inequality in Indonesia’s education system

Co-founder and CTO, CAKAP

Yohan Limerta’s mission with the founding of Cakap, which means “skilful” or “competent”, was to make education more accessible. The online language-learning platform, formerly known as Squline, uses technology to provide Indonesians with an easy, affordable way to upgrade their skills, giving students access to teachers around the world and delivering engaging, two-way learning interaction
