The Hong Kong actress tells us about the persistence and grit needed to make it in acting and in business, and why she’s not afraid to try something new
Rosina Lam loves a challenge. The award-winning Hong Kong actress isn’t afraid to work hard for what she wants and give her all in every project she undertakes. This potent combination of tenacity and talent is likely what propelled her to stardom, earning her awards such as Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2023 for her performance in the TVB courtroom drama Speakers of Law, and Best Actress for her role as Grace Koo in Battle of the Seven Sisters at the 2021 TVB Anniversary Awards.
“Each award is an encouragement to me,” shares the 34-year-old actress. “It’s as if someone is cheering me on along the journey of life, awakening my courage to continue to strive in different areas and explore more possibilities.”

With nearly two decades of acting experience under her belt, Lam has certainly seen success off the big screen and in a different field entirely, running a successful chain of hot pot and dim sum restaurants. In 2017, she made headlines with the announcement that she would take a short break from acting to concentrate on her health and spend more time with her businessman husband, Jason Mok.
“The similarity between being an actress and running a business? Both are highly competitive,” shares the Central Academy of Drama graduate. “Everyone works hard, but hard work does not guarantee success,” she says. “In both fields, success cannot be achieved by one person alone; it requires a good team working together with determination towards the same goal, overcoming numerous challenges.”

From weathering the challenges of keeping restaurants afloat during a pandemic to working around the clock for shoots and events, Lam has certainly had her share of obstacles. “The toughest thing I’ve ever had to do in business was admitting to my own wrong decisions that have led to losses for employees and partners,” she says.
“But success in show business relies on timing, effort, and support and requires persistence without giving up. This mentality also applies to my other businesses, where every new challenge is as unique as a new role in acting.”
Looking ahead, Lam hopes to try out different on-screen roles that will challenge her and resonate with her audiences. She has also set her sights on a new fashion venture, launching her own jewellery line to make beautiful, elegant jewellery available to more women.

“Like all women, I love beauty and elegance. I believe that different styles of jewellery can showcase the unique personalities of different women. It’s not always the size of the diamonds that enhances one’s demeanour; the style needs to match the person, the occasion, and the outfit. That’s why I’m very keen on creating my own brand based on my firsthand experience and feelings. My greatest vision for the brand is to offer everyone more choices with great value.”

Hearing Lam speak, it is increasingly easy to understand why she has made it to where she is, showcasing a rare ability to connect with both television audiences, customers and fans—mirroring their dreams, hopes and aspirations. I asked Lam what the bravest business decision she had ever made was. Her response, not arrogant, demonstrates a refreshing self confidence and level-headed drive to overcome any obstacles to come.
“In fact, every business decision is a big risk, and each time, you have to be brave enough to try. Each experience is both difficult and new. It’s hard to pinpoint which one it was, but I can say that the thought process during important decision-making is definitely no less intricate than constructing a challenging character.”
