Upper House Hong Kong

Admiralty, Hong Kong

This sky-high sanctuary has perfected how to make a house a home

Winner of the 2024 Tatler Best of Asia "Best Service" award

Arriving at Upper House Hong Kong feels like coming home. It’s not just the earthy, elegant interiors or the absence of a “close door” button in the elevator—a rare but welcome reminder in Hong Kong that it’s OK to slow down. What makes Upper House Hong Kong feel like home is its service, which is refreshingly informal—perfectly hitting the sweet spot between attentive and unobtrusive.

It’s also deeply personal. Here, an off-hand comment about enjoying the house-made chocolates could mean a plate of them awaits you at your next meal. Casual praise for the signature ginger verbena fragrance could mean a candle has been organised for you to take home.

Designed by Hong Kong-based architect André Fu, Upper House Hong Kong is calming and contemporary. Its 117 spacious studios and suites are a masterclass in timeless design, featuring details crafted from wood and stone, softened by luxurious textiles. They also boast what are arguably the sexiest bathrooms in Hong Kong—every room features a deep soaking tub, positioned next to floor-to-ceiling windows to soak in panoramic mountain or city views.

Fu’s clever use of light and shadows create an aliveness in the rooms, as lit-up skyscrapers bounce off of the angled windows to bring the electric pulse of the city outside, in. Particularly at night, it’s a cinematic experience worthy of Wong Kar-Wai films; we recommend enjoying this from one of the cushioned window sills.

Over the years, Upper House Hong Kong has become a cultural hub in Hong Kong, hosting art, wellness and fashion workshops, programmes and pop-ups. You’ll often find the city’s movers and shakers, and its creative crowd, hanging out at the hotel’s restaurant, Salisterra, which boasts panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. The adjoining Green Room, with velvet banquettes and Brazilian marble counters, offers a more intimate setting. On sunny days and clear evenings, head up the cascading, lantern-lit steps to secret garden The Lawn.

Tatler Tip: There’s no spa at The Upper House but they have an excellent wellness programme that includes in-room massages, hot-and-cold therapy at 10x Longevity, astrology by Stone & Star, and heated sculpt work-out, Family Form.
