Upper House Chengdu
Chengdu, China

A modern marvel with monastic undertones
Bamboo trees frame The Temple House’s entrance, which is fashioned from a restored Qing Dynasty building and opens to a centuries-old Chinese courtyard. This is juxtaposed with the elegant modernity of the hotel’s main building, designed by the renowned London-based firm Make Architects. The hotel pays tribute to its historic surroundings: it’s part of the Daci Temple Cultural and Commercial Complex, a conservation-meets-modernisation project. The hotel’s Mi Xun Spa, for example, is set in a courtyard that was once the Daci Temple’s mulberry garden. Here, you’ll find a spectacular adults-only freshwater swimming pool, lit by a large skylight. The spacious rooms and suites feature subtle but thoughtful design details, from high-tech touches to lanterns and carved wooden screens that reflect traditional Chengdu architecture.
Tatler Tip
Mi Xun Teahouse, connected to the spa, serves an exceptional selection of teas and plant-based cuisine. The mapo tofu with mushroom sauce and spinach noodles is divine.
