The Kumaon

The Kumaon is located in the foothills of the Himalayas, on the sacred Nanda Devi range, surrounded by rhododendron blooms, ancient trees and Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary where leopards roam. A masterpiece by Sri Lankan architects Pradeep Kodikara and Jineshi Samaraweera—disciples of the modernist master Geoffrey Bawa—its pièce de résistance is the cantilevered restaurant suspended over the valley, accessed by a glass tunnel, which serves delicious produce sourced from local farms. It’s the only restaurant on site, so ask the staff —most of whom are from nearby villages—for in-the-know recommendations if you want to switch things up. After a day of exploring stunning nature trails, retreat to one of 10 suites, which are modern and serene, and feature soaring windows and wood-burning fireplaces.
