Phuket old town
Phuket, Thailand

A cluster of gems from a bygone era
The old quarter of Phuket, originally settled by traders from China, India and Portugal in the 16th century, is a tiny spot of real estate but it’s packed full with things to do, see and experience. Once a flourishing commercial district–and the hub of Phuket’s tin mining industry–settlers from various cultures left their mark on its architecture and way of life.
Centuries-old homes showcase a unique blend of local and Western architectural styles. Yes, they’re mostly now house cafés, restaurants, bars, boutique hotels and shops but still some continue to be family homes and the spirit of the district continues to live on.
You don’t really need a map to explore Phuket old town. Just start from the landmark Promthep clock tower and set off in any direction that takes your fancy. All paths converge into one somewhere, bringing you back to where you started. It’s a spider-web maze of alleys that can keep you occupied for hours–particularly taking in some stops at shops, cafes and historical buildings.
Houses and mansions from the past, as well as shrines and temples, are usually open for the public with detailed descriptions in both Thai and English. Not to be missed is Baan Chinpracha, the first Sino-European style house built in 1903 during the reign of King Rama V. It now houses the famed Blue Elephant restaurant, which essentially, single-handedly, put Thai cuisine on the map worldwide. Some of the more opulent mansions and buildings have been transformed into boutique hotels, while others are now boutique museums that showcase collectibles, home decorations, vintage furniture, old photographs, and clocks and antiques from another era.
The old town is also packed with bars and restaurants that come alive at night. Got some evening time to spare? Stay on until dusk and after to see the day-time businesses packing up as the shop and street lights come to life and the old town takes on a cool, evening vibe.
Whether you’re eager to explore the local culture, indulge in authentic cuisines, or simply take in the unique atmosphere that came into being in this unique juncture of history and geography, the old town is a place to wander, look and revel in the sights, smells and sounds. With hidden gems and surprises around every corner, it’s easy to lose track of time, which is just as well the town doesn’t shutter up and stop having a good time at sunset.
