Ovorkhangai, Mongolia

Where the Orkhon Valley’s fascinating history is met with great hope for its future
Genghis Khan Retreat is a family-owned gem located in the heart of Mongolia’s Orkhon Valley. Guests stay in traditional Mongolian gets constructed by hand, where beds are adorned with soft cashmere made in the family’s factory, which also produces cashmere for Hermès. There are yoga classes in the mornings, a massage ger, a resident shaman, and a sauna with incredible views of the Orkhon River. Daily horse riding expeditions are led by skilled local horsemen. The landscape, which stretches some 100 kilometres east-west along the river, is a Unesco World Heritage Site revered by locals as the gateway to heaven. The retreat’s kitchen is helmed by a Nepalese chef, whose repertoire spans delicious lamb-filled dumplings to pasta with wild morel mushrooms foraged in Nepal, which he hand-carries to Mongolia by the bagful.
