Gangtey Lodge
Gangtey, Bhutan
A beautiful base for meaningful Bhutanese experiences
Gangtey Lodge is an intimate, all-suite luxury retreat perched above the Phobjikha Valley in Bhutan, offering spectacular views of the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery and the surrounding Black Mountains. Designed in the style of a traditional (and grand) Bhutanese farmhouse, the lodge features ornate woodwork, pitched roofs and interiors that perfectly blend cultural authenticity with modern comfort.
The 12 identical "Farmhouse Suites" are a highlight, each featuring heated, hand-cut stone floors, a traditional wood-burning stove (bhukari) and a free-standing English roll-top bathtub set next to a panoramic, valley-facing window—ideal for a meditative soak. The main lodge has cathedral ceilings and an all-glass wall in the lounge and dining area, maximising the sublime mountain views.
A unique cultural wellness offering is the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (dotsho), which takes place in a simple, separate bathhouse. River rocks are heated over a fire and then dropped into a pinewood tub filled with mineral-rich water and medicinal herbs for a deeply therapeutic ritual. The Lodge is also located near the winter roosting grounds of the endangered Black-necked Cranes, making it a perfect base for bird-watching and nature excursions.
Tatler Tip: A highlight is joining the monks for an early morning or evening prayer session at the nearby Gangtey Shedra (Buddhist college).
