Cap Karoso
Sumba, Indonesia

Breezy, Indo-inspired beauty on palm-hugged shores
Just a one-hour flight from Bali, Sumba is Indonesia’s (sort of) secret paradise. The largely undeveloped island boasts rugged coastlines, white sand beaches, wild horses and, as of 2023, Cap Karoso. Heading the design was GFAB Architects, who incorporated local influences like Indonesian art, handmade teaware and hand-carved furniture. In the resort’s 47 rooms and 20 beachfront villas, you’ll find wooden headboards with ikat-like patterns and dreamy, abstract works by French-Indonesian artist Ines Katamso. Dining is a wholesome experience, with produce sourced from the hotel’s on-site organic farm that also acts as a farming school. Its founders, Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara, have committed to initiatives including hiring 80 per cent of the staff locally and using 50 per cent solar power for energy.
Tatler Tip
Dolphin sightings aren’t uncommon at Cap Karoso, so book a boat or rent a surfboard and get out there.
