Asaba Ryokan
Shizuoka, Japan

This otherworldly ryokan transforms with the seasons
“Is that AI?” one editor asked when shown photos of Asaba Ryokan. It was not, but it’s a testament to the property’s otherworldly beauty. Here, koi swim in a stream-fed pond and tatami-floored tea rooms look out over ornamental gardens that transform with the seasons—each seemingly more captivating than the last. The estate was founded over five centuries ago by the same family that continues to own and run it today. It was once inhabited by monks before a tradition of Noh theatre emerged; today, this Relais & Châteaux property continues the artform with performances for guests—while also upholding another tradition, that of ryokan hospitality, of which it offers some of the best in Japan.
Tatler Tip
Carve out some time to enjoy Asaba Ryokan’s hot pools, which uses water from the hot river coursing through the picturesque town of Shuzenji.
