andBeyond Punakha River
Punakha, Bhutan

An off-the-grid escape defined by cultural cues and protected landscapes
Cradled by Himalayan mountains in the Punakha Valley, andBeyond Punakha River Lodge sits on the banks of the Mo Chhu River and stays true to the South African company’s ethos of melding luxury with natural beauty. The property features six tented suites, plus one- and two-bedroom villas. The tents are pitched in Bhutanese timber structures, with woodwork featuring intricate painted and gilded details. Other Bhutanese elements include motifs of the blue poppy, the national flower, and handwoven wool textiles. The gentle swish of the river can be heard from every lodge—a meditative hum that becomes a nightly lullaby. The lodge only occupies about 25 per cent of its land; the rest has been allocated to local farmers, who supply the hotel’s produce.
