Amanyangyun
Shanghai, China

A surreal stay in restored Qing dynasty houses turned luxury villas
Amanyangyun, on the outskirts of Shanghai, is revered for its blend of historical preservation and modern luxury. Building it involved the ambitious relocation of an entire village from Fuzhou, Jiangxi province, to Shanghai, preserving 50 Ming and Qing dynasty houses and thousands of camphor trees—a monumental effort spearheaded by entrepreneur Ma Dadong and the Aman Group to save the village from potential destruction due to a new reservoir project. The resort features 26 restored residences, adorned with ornate carvings and reliefs that narrate family histories spanning two millennia. The centrepiece of Amanyangyun is Nan Shufang, a space inspired by the royal reading pavilion in the Forbidden City, which hosts activities such as calligraphy and tea ceremonies.
