Amankora Punkha

Amankora Punakha is accessed by a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River, lined with prayer flags. Guests are given a string of prayer flags on arrival, with the option to add it to the bridge. Selfishly, we took ours home as a souvenir.

The property is built around a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse that was built by a former Je Khenpo, or chief abbot of Bhutan, the bottom floor of which is now a dining room with two long tables. Outside of the farmhouse is a stone courtyard, where drinks are served in the evenings. Further down the hill is a heated infinity pool surrounded by views of rice terraces that line Punakha Valley.

Guest rooms comprise  a king-size bed, large freestanding bathtubs, timber finishing and banquette window seating overlooking majestic forests. There's WiFi, but no televisions. In the evenings, guests can ask the staff to light the bukhari wood-burning stove—found in every room—so you can fall asleep to the soothing sounds of a crackling fire.
