Dramatic domes and soaring columns bring Borobodur’s history into the now
Amanjiwo is a magnificent retreat that overlooks the ninth-century Buddhist sanctuary of Borobudur, a Unesco World Heritage site. The hotel, built entirely from locally quarried limestone, features dramatic domes and soaring columns, and feels as though it could be the last surviving structure of an ancient civilisation. The resort features hand-carved furniture, Javanese textiles and antique glass paintings. Tennis players will get a kick out of the courts, which overlook Menoreh Hill. The Borobudur suites offer breathtaking views of the region’s 1,300-year-old architecture, cradled in a valley created by two volcanoes. Waking up to this view is an experience that borders on spiritual. For the more discreet, the Dalem Jiwo suite has a private entrance and an infinity pool fashioned from green Javanese stone.
