For Zhi Wei Zeng, architecture is a way to connect humans and nature
Zhi Wei Zeng has always been fascinated by the relationship between development and nature. Born in Taiwan in 1973, Zeng grew up in Palau, studied at SDA American International School, then conducted long-term studies of the built environment in Taiwan and Bali. In 2002, he founded natural foreign trade architecture studio, Divooe Zein Architects.
In 2014, he built the enigmatic Siu Siu - Lap of Primitive Senses, an urban space that transitions into a natural forest, further exploring architecture as a way to connect humans and nature. The greenhouse and private retreat in Taipei’s Shilin district earned Zeng an ADA Award for Emerging Architects.
At the Venice Biennale, Divooe Zein Architects drew all eyes on Taiwan. The exhibition, titled “Primitive Migration from/to Taiwan”, once again reflected Zeng’s long-standing exploration of design that is inspired by the “primitive essence of mankind”.
His range of work includes the renovation of historical buildings, experimental residences, and new research institutions. Other notable projects include the Nature Monastery in Bali, Semi-Ecosphere Glass House for Isolation and Meditation, Lab of Primitive Perception, and The Forest BIG.
