Tunku Zain 'Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz

A Malaysian blue-blood, Tunku Zain ‘Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz is dedicated to building a better nation with his think tank, IDEAS

Tunku Zain ‘Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz is the second son of the ruler of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, and the founding president of Malaysia’s first libertarian think tank, the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS).

A graduate of London School of Economics and Political Science, where he obtained a degree in Government and Sociology, and a Master’s in Comparative Politics and Imperial History, Tunku Zain has previous experience at London-based think tanks. He worked as a parliament researcher at the House of Commons before moving to Washington, DC to serve at the World Bank as a public-sector consultant, followed by work as a research fellow at the National University of Singapore.

Returning to Malaysia, in 2010 Tunku Zain partnered with two friends to establish IDEAS, an economic and public-policy research non-profit organisation that has contributed towards policy making in Malaysia by promoting solutions to public-policy challenges. He is a regular columnist in several local newspapers, where he shares his thoughts on public policies and speaking out for a better Malaysia.

Tunku Zain is a trustee of Yayasan Chow Kit, Yayasan Munarah and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, and was recently appointed the first Pro-Chancellor of UCSI University. Outside the think-tank and public-policy world, Tunku Zain is a great champion of the arts. The accomplished pianist, who is a patron of Hands Percussion and the Euroasia Association of Performing Arts, previously collaborated with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra to revitalise the state anthem of Negeri Sembilan.
