Yu Sing Lim

Founder, Studio Akanoma

An architectural graduate of the Bandung Institute of Technology, Yu Sing started Studio Akanoma in 2008. The firm’s name stands for akar anomali, and points to the firms’ deep commitment to Indonesia’s cultures, potentials, and challenges. The axis of his work is to “serve all walks of life”, especially lower income groups. Hence, the firm strives to provide an affordable eco-friendly architecture approach, along with the sustainable development of “ecological tourism designs” that includes “the community as actors”. For example, Akanoma always encourages clients to include local materials and materials obtained from small industries. He has also set up crowd funding for those who cannot afford to build their own houses. Additionally, he published a book in 2009, Mimpi Rumah Murah, about affordable, green and healthy houses. His sustainability ethics, along with his works in village improvement, social housing and more have been winning prizes since 2009. Recently, the studio’s work on an ocean learning center in Yogyakarta won a Green Leadership Award from BCI Asia in 2016, and the Holcim Award Indonesia for Sustainable Construction in 2015. He hopes to inspire young architects to serve the poor by meeting their basic need of housing.
