Badminton superstar Yang Lee took a gamble leaving his previous team, but it paid off in gold

After their disappointing opening match in their first-ever Olympics in Tokyo, a medal seemed unlikely for the badminton duo Yang Lee and Chi Lin Wang. But their fortunes began to reverse when they beat the No. 1 and No. 2 duos and finally overwhelmed China in the finals to win Taiwan’s first Olympic badminton gold medal.

Lee and Wang first paired up in 2019 when Lee was invited to join Wang’s Land Bank team. At their first international competition together, they won the first of what would be seven titles in the Badminton Federation World Tour. The two were actually classmates in high school but were at different stages in their badminton journey, Lee having just started while Wang was already winning junior competitions.

During the first half of 2020 when there were no competitions, the duo had extra time to practice and improve their chemistry. Finally, Lee and Wang won the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men's doubles gold medal.
