Chairman, Evergreen Marine Corp
Yan Yi Chang joined Evergreen in 1987 as a seafarer, climbing the ranks as captain and working in various sectors from transportation to marine technology. He has also served as director of the Evergreen Maritime Museum, which features an impressive collection of scale model ships.
In the decade before the pandemic, the global shipping industry was already in crisis, and Evergreen, which was founded in 1968 by the late Yung Fa Chang of EVA Airways, sustained a total loss of NT$6.7 billion between 2011 and 2019.
The pandemic proved to be a boon, when in 2020 the company made a profit of NT$24.4 billion, benefiting from both the increase in freight rates and the decrease in oil prices. Looking forward, Evergreen has committed to buying 14,750 containers and 33 new ships to be delivered in 2021 and 59 more by 2025. With the increase in shipping capacity, Chang hopes to put Evergreen back in the global top five.
