Zhejiang-born poet and author Xu Kan often writes about people in the margins of China’s society, from the elderly to the differently abled, who seek to be valued and of value to their community. Their desire to transcend and forget the trivial is often related to the ennui experienced by many of China’s youth today—feelings that Kan captures in his award-winning works.
