Venture Corporation CEO Wong Ngit Liong has also helped shape Singapore’s economic and education landscapes

Chairman and CEO Wong Ngit Liong has brought Venture Corporation a long way from its beginnings as a contract manufacturer of electronic components. These days, the firm is a player on the world stage, providing services such as supply-chain management as well as technical support for goods ranging from communications equipment to medical devices.

Wong started his career at Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), occupying management positions at the IT giant’s Silicon Valley office in the US. In the 1970s, HP co-founder Bill Hewlett asked Wong to set up a HP office in Penang, Malaysia, and later, one in Singapore. After spending 12 years at HP, Wong was appointed managing director of Technocom-Multitech group in 1986, and subsequently started Venture Group in 1989.

The trained engineer has held directorships at public-listed companies and local statutory bodies such as Singapore Exchange, DBS Bank, the Economic Development Board of Singapore and International Enterprise Singapore. Wong was also chairman of the Board of Trustees at the National University of Singapore from 2004-2016, and helped to set the institution’s vision and direction after it was corporatised in 2006.

Growing up in Johor, Malaysia, Wong Ngit Liong was a top student in the state with several scholarships to his name. He graduated with first-class honours in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malaya, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley on a Fulbright scholarship.
