William Tanuwijaya is behind one of the biggest Indonesian e-commerce marketplaces
Born and raised in North Sumatra, William Tanuwijaya came from humble beginnings before succeeding in business with persistence and hard work. He moved to Jakarta to enrol in Universitas Bina Nusantara, where he graduated in 2003 with a degree in Information Technology. In 2009, he co-founded Tokopedia, which is now a unicorn start-up and among the biggest Indonesian-born, e-commerce marketplaces. Tokopedia has received numerous fundings from prominent companies, such as Google and Singaporean state fund Temasek. After merging with Gojek and becoming GoTo in 2021, William still holds his position as the CEO of the company that he built. Among his admirable acknowledgements is the 2019 Ernst & Young Indonesia Entrepreneur of the Year and the 2020 Forbes Indonesia’s Businessman of the Year. William is also part of the Young Global Reader in the World Economic Forum since 2016.
