Disappointed with the design of existing smartphone cases, Wesley Ng established Casetify in 2011 with his school friend Ronald Yeung. The company now has more than 1,000 employees and has sold more than 25 million phone cases worldwide.

Born in Hong Kong but largely educated in Australia, Ng is the former head of digital and broadcast design at Now TV; he left the job after Casetify was born. Casetify shot to fame by allowing people to customise their cases with their own Instagram photos, then it started manufacturing its own distinctive designs. It’s a celebrity favourite worldwide: famous fans include Kylie Jenner, Pharrell Williams, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa and Jisoo, while Sarah Jessica Parker and BTS have collaborated with the company on their own collections. It has also collaborated with more than 100 companies, including fashion brands such as Moncler, Saint Laurent, Vetements, Yohji Yamamoto, Sacai and Thom Browne. The Louvre even chose Casetifty to produce phone accessories and water bottles emblazoned with the Mona Lisa, while a 2021 collab with the NBA resulted in 300 18-karat gold cases. The company makes most of its sales online, but it also has physical stores in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Shanghai, Korea and Japan with others in the works in the US.

In 2021, New World Development boss Adrian Cheng’s C Ventures took a stake in the company, marking the Hong Kong-based company’s first-ever external funding since it was founded in 2011.

A big chunk of Casetify’s portfolio of accessories is designed by more than 300 artists that collaborate with the platform. Casetify has been a staunch supporter of the global creative community, showcasing and supporting artists by sharing profits with them once an accessory with their design is sold.

In 2021, Casetify released its re/Casetify programme— an upcycling programme that was nominated by FastCompany to receive the World Changing Ideas award. Through the programme, Casetify recycles unwanted and used cases for store credit. Today, Casetify has diverted over 160,000 phone cases from landfills—that’s roughly the length of 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
