Wen Pin Chien, the director of the largest theatre complex under one roof, has big plans for Taiwan’s cultural scene

As the director of the stunning new performing arts centre in Weiwuying, Wen Pin Chien has programmed a full and diverse schedule of opera, experimental theatre, acrobatics, orchestral performances, and more, reflecting the freedom that the centre represents, being the newest cultural building constructed after 2000. Through his years directing the National Symphony Orchestra, Chien helped broaden the classical music experience for Taiwanese concertgoers, initiating its annual.

Subscription Concerts and Opera Series, and leading the production of Wagner’s complete Ring cycle, the first time it was produced in the Chinese-speaking regions. As a teenager, he watched the debut performance of the NSO, and dreamed of them achieving international recognition. Chien developed an interest in conducting while at university, and pursued further studies in Vienna, after which he won a number of competitions in Europe. He has conducted at major opera houses in Europe and is a frequent guest conductor with well-known international orchestras.
