A local culinary mainstay and grand dame of Peranakan cuisine, Violet Oon has been a food broadcaster, critic and restaurateur, and an ambassador to Singapore’s food scene for half a century

Chef, restaurateur and food writer Violet Oon has been a fixture on Singapore’s culinary scene for over 50 years, celebrating the Lion City’s diverse food offerings and Nyonya favourites, which are especially close to her heart.

Oon, who has also worked as a singer, reporter, and music and food critic, learnt to cook from her aunts and grand-aunts when she was 16. She worked as a journalist in the 1970s and 1980s, eventually starting her own culinary magazine, The Food Paper, in 1987. It was only a matter of time before she would venture out to launch her own restaurants, which she did in the 1990s at Takashimaya mall and Bukit Pasoh Road. Regularly hosting and guesting on radio and television programmes locally and internationally raised her status to Singapore’s quintessential food ambassador.

Today, Oon operates four restaurants with her son Tay Yiming and daughter Tay Su-Lyn. Each establishment celebrates Peranakan cuisine’s rich heritage and multitude of flavours with top-notch, quality ingredients.
